My students need guitar picks, construction paper, saxophone reeds, and other materials to be able to have a great experience learning in my music class. These materials will be used for both general music and band classes.
Have you ever taken a test in an auditorium? One of the questions that comes up is "What are we supposed to lean on?" My students kneel on the floor and use the seat part of the chairs as a desk. The materials will save their backs and posture and allow them to participate in class normally.
My students are a culturally diverse group in an urban public school.
They come from all kinds of socioeconomic backgrounds but all have the same attitude towards education and that is to give 110%. They come to my class each year begging to learn more about music and how to play more instruments. I am trying to give them what their hard work deserves by rewarding that work with the essentials of a great general music class.
My Project
The reeds and drum mallet packs will be utilized in the school's first ever concert band which has just begun this year. The saxophones and cymbals will enable them to practice, perform and find success on their instruments. The boomwhackers are going to be a big hit for my school. I teach special education courses in music as well and I want to show those students the wonders of music as well and the boomwhackers will enable them to perform songs and play an instrument as well. The clipboards are to save the backs of my students. Since class is held in the auditorium, they have to do all written work in the wooden auditorium chairs, this means that there is nothing to lean on. They usually end up kneeling on the floor and using the seat portion of the chair as a desk and I do not think it is good for their knees or their backs.
These resources are going to help the music live throughout our school.
It will enable music to reach out to students with disabilities and students that have not been given the wonderful opportunity to play in a performance ensemble. It's these kinds of experiences that students remember for the rest of their lives.
