Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a low-economic, Title 1 rural school district where majority of my students are labeled as economically disadvantaged and are at risk of dropping out before graduation. Most recently, Hurricane Harvey impacted our students as our campus is in a rural district that is prone to flooding which has created an added stress to their lives as many of our students' homes were flooded and their families are still recovering.
Many of my students are impacted by homelessness and often come to school without basic supplies, experience hunger, are sleep deprived, and are withdrawn.
For these reasons, my district offers every child 100% free breakfast and lunch, a minimal dress code, and a partnership with the Houston Food Bank.
My students are eager to learn and grow in their mathematical journey each and every day; however, our lack of resources limits us.
My Project
My students have struggled so much in math that they have given up on learning or have severe anxiety when given new concepts to learn. However, music is very much in my students' souls as they often are making songs to reflect their learning.
I have transformed my students' math education by incorporating instrumental music to ease anxiety during independent practice and exams as well as transforming their math notes into songs to help them retain knowledge.
The MP3 players I am requesting will help me provide music to individual students in class without disrupting others learning, so that each and all my students will be able to succeed.
Music is the one commonality among all my students that helps them overcome the stresses that Hurricane Harvey has placed in their lives. Help me use music to make a deeper connection to learning their most difficult subject of mathematics. All your help and support is greatly appreciated from students and myself.
