I teach at a title one school which means many of the students are low income. In my school over 94% of the students receive free lunch. I have 17 wonderful kindergartners in my class of which 9 are girls and 8 are boys.
Many of my students do not have the best home life and do not have a chance to experience music outside of my classroom. I want to give my students the best chance to experience many different musical instruments while in my classroom. I currently do not have any musical instruments and my students have a particular interest in music. They ask me every day if we have music that day because they want to play the instruments.
According to research music helps with increasing attention and improving memory. It also helps the students focus on the academics that need to be learned. Music also enhances imagination in the students. I would like a rhythm set, handbells, a music center bag and a xylophone. The music will help my students focus on the academics when it is time to learn.
As Ludwig Van Beethoven said, "Music is the electrical soil in which the spirit lives, thinks and invents." You will make it possible for my students to experience music in many different ways in the classroom. The students will learn how to play music from me, they will listen to music around the world and they will have a chance to create their own music.
