This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Give us the basics! Our newly formed music program has no "small-goods" money and is missing many items normally found in a music classroom. "It is difficult to grow a music program in a technological world when you don't even have an LCD Projector to show the students what is out there."
Our area is an economically disadvantaged tough neighborhood to say the least.
Our students are in a high poverty area and all come from what most would consider a pretty rough inner-city neighborhood. Our school is very close to 100% free and reduced lunch.
My Project
With the lack of computers in our music-room, an LCD Projector would at the very least serve as a window to the outside world. As we study and listen to various types of music and musical performances, I would be able to create presentations and share music websites. The projector would be so useful in teaching students to read music via interactive websites. I have also started an afterschool band program to provide an opportunity for students to apply the musical skills they are learning in class. The drumstick and mallets will be added to our small and worn collection. These materials would go along ways to spur interest for students that cannot afford to purchase their own sticks/and mallets.
It is difficult to get students to commit to afterschool music rehearsal when you tell them they will have to pay for their own drumsticks or mallets.
Your generous donation will enable me to keep 10-20 more students engaged with music and off the streets in the evenings. Your donation of the projector is the one single item that would benefit the overall music program in the most numerous ways. The most important of these ways being an increase in overall music literacy.
