This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am an urban educator of twenty years who is passionate about my students and cultivating their learning. I invite you to share in my journey of educating our inner-city students. By working with my fabulous class, you are inspiring and investing in our future leaders of our schools, churches, neighborhoods and country.
My mission as an urban educator, is to create a positive learning experience for my students in a safe environment with high expectations for success.
Our school is located where the Sherman Park riots took place in August 2016. Unfortunately, the streets of the inner city teach our students hard lessons that are out of my control. My students come to school battling anxiety, trauma, defiant behavior, attention issues, hunger, learning deficits, and depression. What is in my control... I can equip myself and my classroom with tools to support, educate, excite and engage my students on an hourly basis.
Our K-8th grade school serves 98% of economically disadvantaged students, 30% of our school are students with a disability. We have an alarming number of students that have not yet been identified as having special needs, but suffer from mental health issues. Let's make a change!
My Project
African drums have a unique history and my inner city students are drawn to them. Unfortunately, due to district budget cuts our students have not had music classes in years. There continues to be a lack of musical appreciation and expression.
Rhythm and music have a calming effect on students.
If my students had access to African drums in my classroom, the drums could serve as a huge tool for teaching self awareness, listening skills, cooperation and patience within our classroom community. These essential life skills are best taught through music and movement as this approach keeps students actively engaged.
