I am a music appreciation teacher in an inner city high school in downtown, Brooklyn, New York City. I've been teaching THE BLUES to my students this semester. We have had an amazing journey together - starting with the African Griot/Jeli of Africa, through the Mississippi Delta, Chicago Blues, Electric Blues, Women of the Blues (to name a few highlights) and now we've come to the point where they are holding harmonicas in their hands, starting to learn about that versatile instrument. I am incredibly proud of these 45+ students. The Blues has brought us together in a great way. At my building's Christmas Party (just tonight) I've had the honor of meeting and making friends with one of my neighbors - Mr. Michael Hill, the founder and leader of the New York City Blues Mob - one of New York City's top blues musicians, composers and bands. Mr. Hill has offered to bring himself and his band to meet, speak with and play for our students for a very low fee. For a man who conducts a busy blues recording and touring schedule - this is a GIFT to our school. THIS IS THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY FOR MY STUDENTS TO LEARN ABOUT NEW YORK CITY BLUES – AN URBAN BLUES STYLE THAT IS ALIVE AND WELL and from one of the main players. This is LIVE BLUES at our school for extremely deserving students. Mr. Hill and I plan to use the visit to help students write their own 12 bar blues tunes about their own life experience in NYC. Mr. Hill is the featured bluesman in the August edition of LIVING BLUES Magazine and I intend to have my students read about, study and listen to his music, his life, before he comes to the school. Mr. Hill is also going to arrange to bring a well known blues harmonica player to speak to my students about playing the harmonica. Then he would play a small concert for our school. Alas, there's no money in the school budget to provide this program. Will you make this happen? Please help me to help my students make this powerful LIVE connection to THE BLUES, to NYC BLUES to their own talents - through one of New York City's own Living Blues Legends.
