My students need listening centers in order to listen to audio recordings while they follow along in their song-based picture books.

The kids I teach love being part of our school community, and as a music teacher, I have the privilege of teaching every single child in our building. These 207 children range from K0 to 2nd grade students in the 2016-17 school year, with a new grade level added each academic year. Our students come from a high poverty urban neighborhood, and 100% of them receive free lunch. While many of our students have faced serious obstacles to healthy learning and development from a young age, these kids are resilient and show the potential to become great learners and musicians.
These kids could be the next generation of concert musicians, rock stars, and divas!
Their musical energy is palpable in the classroom, and their aptitude is equally high. I fill my music classes with action songs, singing games, and challenges that keep students excited about their musical accomplishments. Along with our school community, I maintain the highest standards for student performance, and my students grow more and more confident as they see that they are able to meet and even exceed these expectations. Music class serves as an opportunity for these kids to shine and feel empowered.
Our music program has begun a song-based picture book library to encourage our students to read and sing. Now we need listening centers so that our students can make the most of these materials. We will set up two listening centers, one located in the music room and another in a common space for students to use throughout the school day.
Each of our listening centers will have a comfortable seat, an audio player and headphones, and a book storage unit from which students can select their song-based story.
Students will be able to use these centers during choice time and as a break from whole class activities when needed. In addition to our song-based picture books, students will be able to choose from wordless musical selections, such as "The Carnival of the Animals" and "Peter and the Wolf."
