Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend one of the largest high schools in Oklahoma City of 1500 students. Most of my students are absolute beginners when it comes to performing on stage and playing the classical guitar. The only ones that are not beginners are the 40 that are a part of my Honors Guitar Classes. My students go to a Title I school where all who attend as a student receive free breakfast and lunch. For some of my students this will sometimes be the only food they eat all day.
All of my students must learn to read standard music notation.
My guitar students range from freshman to seniors in high school. They all show a large interest in performing on stage although many are extremely nervous about it. I want them to experience the feeling and accomplishment of putting hard work into a project (songs) for many months and seeing it come to reality in front of the their friends and family. I want them to have a forever reminder of the evening. My students deserve to have the equipment and experience that all other students receive in any given school.
My Project
I am currently teaching music appreciation. The students all learn better when they have hands on experience. This semester we are studying the guitar and how to read music notation with the guitar in a Classical/Spanish style. The students are analyzing and composing melodies on the guitar. Next semester we will focus on percussion/rhythms.
I believe the best way to create a lifelong learner of any subject they must fall in love with it by doing it.
The students will fall in love with music most by actually playing and performing it-not just listening.
With these practice pads, sticks, and the book I will have all of the necessary equipment to give my students the hands-on learning they all need. Many of my students in my music appreciation class are special education. This will help with their mental and physical abilities more than just sitting and listening.
