I teach in Wichita, KS. There are approximately 920 students and it is the largest K-8 school in the Wichita district. I teach K-5 general music as well as exploratory classes for 7th and 8th grade students.
I am so excited to work with the students, parents, and staff to bring them the love and joy of music.
Our school is in the top 1% of the most diverse schools in the state. Our school has 62% minority enrollment with 28% Asian, 12% Hispanic, and 11% Black. Our students eligible for free and reduced lunch is at 40%. I want to give my new students the best opportunities to learn.
My Project
Our students have 30 ukuleles that were purchased by our PTO. Now we need music, stickers to mark chords on the fingerboard, and tuners to make sure we sound good. Students will learn how to read tabs, what fingers to use as they play the song, and how to strum the ukulele. I will be using ukuleles with 4th and 5th graders as well as my middle school classes. Learning to play builds self-esteem and helps students transition to more difficult musical instruments later.
By donating to this project, you are providing my students with a chance to learn something that will benefit them for the rest of their lives, whether they choose to pursue music or not.
By playing the ukuleles, you will enrich my students lives with music.
