Help me give my students the gift of literacy through music and stories.

Hooray! This project is fully funded
My students are a very diverse group of kids, mostly from low-income families. 100% of our students receive free lunch. We also have many children who have recently immigrated and speak little to no English. I serve all grades, kindergarten through fifth grade.
Music is one of the very few areas of their day where everyone is on an equal playing field.
We can all dance, we can all sing, no matter the language, and we can all create together. My goal is to give these students the tools they need to navigate the world as lifelong musicians and appreciate the music of others.
Everyone loves a good story. It's no different in music class. We use stories every day to explain concepts, accompany our music-making, and just to have fun.
This project includes a list of 37 tried and true titles that will expand my students' music classroom library.
Ten of these titles are teacher resource books full of songs, chants, and games. Twenty-seven of these titles are story books with a wide range of topics including musical concepts, instrument families, Black history and jazz, and patriotic music.
By using books in the music classroom, I can improve my students' literacy, increase their creativity and imagination, and expose them to many stories from many people and places.
