My classroom is full of energetic third grade students who come to school each day ready to learn and display their excitement and eagerness to do so on a consistent basis. Not only do my students vary in academic levels in all subject areas, my classroom also contains students that are raised in bilingual households speaking various languages. Many students also receive free or reduced price lunches.
My classroom includes students who are creative, inventive, and curious, therefore, I have made it my goal to enhance their curiosity and knowledge as much as possible to meet the needs of the future we are preparing them for!
The goal of our school and my own classroom is to help all students become successful and valuable members of the twenty-first century with a wealth of knowledge in various areas.
Every year I teach a thematic unit on the Iditarod and incorporate all subject areas. In order to dive even deeper, my project includes high quality, engaging, nonfiction, fiction, and relevant books. Many of these books will be used as read alouds, independent reading, and partner reading.
The Iditarod encompasses everything that I hope to teach my students about strength, determination, hope, applying knowledge to life, character, perseverance, and teamwork.
In addition, having these books will provide numerous opportunities for students to practice and improve upon important reading strategies such as making inferences, making connections, summarizing, and synthesizing.
I strive to show my students the passion, inspiration, challenges overcome, and knowledge that comes from the mushers, dogs, volunteers, pilots, vets, educators, students, and fans. I will be able to prove how these mushers and dogs are true athletes and heroic examples, just as the other popular and well-known athletes that many students look up to are.
Having these books within my classroom available to students on a daily basis will certainly help provide high interest and true engagement throughout the entire unit - a teacher's dream!
