Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are a part of a unique program. They are studying to be Museum Professionals at the only, high school level, Museum Studies program here in Washington, DC. Because we are not a large department, we have to work twice as hard to fundraise for the materials that we need.

My students are amazing artists who have not hesitated when I asked them to take photos or record and edit podcasts and videos for class projects using their own cell phones because we do not have cameras, tripods, microphones, lights or a computer for them to edit on.

They are willing to make things happen with the limited resources that I have, so I'm willing to do all that I can to get them more resources.

My Project

My students are studying Museum Communications and we are seeking to establish a newsletter, podcast, talk show and social media site for the entire Museum Studies department. The students are learning the behind the scenes work necessary to run a museum. They curate and produce four art shows a year, but struggled to gain a consistent audience for their shows. In class, students decided to rectify this issue by establishing effective communications for their in-school museum. The students do research on topics that are relevant to the museum world, or their school community, and report their findings according to the department they are in. They switch departments every 3 weeks so each student has experience running the social media page, recording content for the video or podcast channels, and sharing that information to the school and parents via the weekly newsletter.

Right now, they are running the entire communications program using their cell phones and my desktop computer.

We were granted access to the Adobe Creative Cloud by the district and I would love to be able to train them on creating these products at an industry level. I am aware that other schools have full recording studios, edit suites and studios in our district. Although I would love to gift them that, I could give them a similar experience with a few key items.
