This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach art in a low income school for at-risk students. We have limited funds for supplies and the many of the students' behavior has changed for the better just to stay in the art class. I teach more than art in my classroom, we all learn about life and how to deal with obstacles and tasks life throws.
I am proposing for equipment needed to support a mural project to be completed by 8th grade middle school art students. Our middle school is in need of adornment, a task that could easily be completed by our talented students if we had the adequate supplies for this project.
Students participating in this mural project will include 15 of the 8th grade Honors art students. The mural will be painted will be entirely designed and painted by students using a cooperative approach. Supplies needed to fund this proposed project include various painting supplies for making the mural.
With these materials and supplies, students will gain familiarity with and use a variety of art resources and materials, organize their ideas, values, and beliefs into visual art expressions, using the processes and materials of visual art through a variety of cooperative artistic experiences, to help them understand, interpret, and appreciate the natural and man-made visual world and the interior world of their own imagination.
The mural will represent the fighting spirit of our school and how we overcome all of our obstacles. The image will be of a mascot breaking through the wall exposing bricks behind the drywall. As the wall crumbles and the mascot enters the school through the bricks, the elements on the mascot turn into learning aids such as: pencils, books, art materials, musical instruments, and other things that represent education.
