As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges in school and outside of school. Many are being raised in single parent households and receive a free breakfast and lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Despite this, they still come to the classroom often with a smile, eagerly anticipating "What are we drawing today?"
The students I work with are direct, active, require positive encouragement, clever, and genuinely want to succeed.
I want my kids to feel welcomed, noticed, validated and celebrated when they come into my classroom, regardless of their interest in art or what their life outside of school looks like.
This past year, students were promised paint from the School District to decorate the hallways...the paint never came. By the end of the 2017-2018 school year, there were many disappointed students who so desperately wanted to help decorate the hallways with their own designs.
This coming year, I have decided to ask for the supplies a different route, in attempts to get my kids the paint and supplies that were promised to them last year.
The supplies for this project will go towards a mural that will start outside the art room and extend to who knows where else in the future.
