Munching Math with Heavy Hands is a project designed to provide students with hands on math learning experiences while exploring various concepts and facts in math. Students will have the occasion to read books, eat sweet treats, and use manipulatives to investigate measurement, addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions and geometry. Having a classroom set of books will allow each child to work independently or in small group settings. Students will have the opportunity to work at their own pace ? not feeling intimidated by others who sometimes finish sooner. The interest of the children will be held because they will actually get to eat the manipulatives they will be working with (M&Ms, Twizzler Pull and Peel, and Hershey's Bars). (I do realize that candy is not a part of the basic food groups, but it's a way to get students motivated and interested in learning.) Students will also have access to geared clocks that will make teaching the concept of time a lot easier as they move the minute had and watch the simultaneous movement of the hour hand that sometimes goes unnoticed. Measurements tools will allow students to explore measurement in a math center where they can work in small groups and independently. The intent is to make math fun for our second grade students while helping them to develop a better understanding of concepts that continue to be a struggle for them.

I teach all subjects in the second grade with math and reading being our main content areas to strengthen before students leave our classroom. I have students coming from affluent to low socio-economic home environments. My classroom is made up of children that reflect the demographics of our school environment; consequently, I am certain to encounter students that will continue to struggle with some ideas in math and reading. My primary goal is to have my students understand and appreciate math and reading while helping them to relate it to real-life situations and activities.
