Supply and demand is how I'd sum up my recent dilemma. I have voracious readers vying for the same titles in my classroom library so I need more of a supply of the most popular ones.
This school year I have the pleasure to be teaching reading and writing to two groups of wonderfully unique students.
They are energetic, enthusiastic and love to learn new things. For approximately 40% of the students at my school, English is not their first language. Each student brings special qualities that provide opportunities to foster language development and growth.
My Project
My students need multiple copies of the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series to encourage and promote independent reading. I am hoping to expand my classroom library's series section with the books I've requested. These "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" books will simply fly off of my shelves and into my students' hands. I currently have one copy of each and that has proved not to be enough. These books (part of a series) are desirable in many ways. First of all the stories are highly entertaining and extremely humorous. They are also part of a series and books that are part of a series offer less anxiety for the novice reader when making book selections. One of the difficulties young readers have is finding a book that appeals to them. Trips to the library sometimes result in simply wandering back and forth aimlessly. Books in a series offer familiarity, and once a reader connects with that perfect book, reading for pleasure follows. Since series books have patterned plots, they also free readers up to utilize reading strategies to deepen comprehension.
This set of the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" books will help to strengthen my students' reading skills and promote positive aspects of reading.
There are so many other activities competing for my students' time that I want them to choose to read. Books in a series are the perfect vehicle to hook them. Your support will help my students begin to devour serials creating an appetite for books that will last a lifetime.
