I teach an early childhood special education class. My class has 8 students ranging from kindergarten to second grade age. These children face great obstacles when learning how to read. In addition to social and emotional problems, they have learning disabilities that make it difficult for them to recognize letters and sounds and put them together to form words. I have seen that children who do not learn to read by third grade suffer increased feelings of low self esteem. They may eventually refuse to participate in academic activities altogether, for fear of additional failure. Therefore, I feel it is extremely important for me to reach these young children before they move on to third grade. I have been trained in a multi-sensory approach to teaching reading and writing. The Touchphonics System is a wonderful, research-based method that employs "touch-units", more than 200 textured 3-dimensional color-coded letters and letter combinations. Students use visual, auditory and tactile/kinesthetic modalities to help them with phonemic awareness. However, our school lacks the necessary funds to purchase the system for our classroom. The Touchphonics system is an intensive program used for one-on-one instruction. I am anxious to use the program with the children who are in my class now, and for those I will teach in the years to come. With your help, we can help these children overcome their difficulties, and go on to a future of real academic achievement. Thank you.
