I am a sixth grade Language Arts and Social Studies teacher. My students are typical of children today, bright, energetic and accustomed to using all their senses to learn. I work hard to make sure that they are fully engaged in learning, but the school year is long and I need some help to keep them interested. Throughout the year we study the cultures of various countries for Social Studies, my school has many wonderful videos available that would give my students a chance to see some of the places and customs we read about. The problem is that the TV and VCR are eithier unavailable or not working. I would love to set up a media center in my classroom where students could view videos. The center would be used for Social Studies and Language Arts. Part of our Language Arts curriculum is Author Studies, we read a selection of books by an Author and discuss common threads that run through them. Last year we were able to view the video Jacob I Have Loved. It brought our discussion of Katherine Pattersen to a new level. Even the children who had trouble reading the book were able to join in our discussions. The presence of a TV and VCR in my classroom would allow my students to visit places they have only read about. It will also allow students who have trouble reading to use another path to literature and join in our class discussions. We live in a society where children are used to having multisensory experiences. I would like to use this to their benefit by presenting material to them in as many ways as possible. I am certain that the 65 students I teach each day will benefit from having this technology available to them.
