Hi, my name is Laura. I teach in a classroom with students who have been diagnosed with severe and profound autism. My students are from five different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. They are between the ages of 7 and 10 years old. We are located in a Chicago Public School with other students ranging from pre-k to 7th grade.
Only two of my students are verbal. But even they have echolalaic speech patterns. The other three students are completely nonverbal. They can get frustrated at times not being able to communicate. I often use music to help calm these wonderful people. They get so much joy from our music time. One student in particular loves music. She has been said to have such a low cognitive functioning level that she is untestable. I however, have seen her put two and two together when it comes to listening to music. If allowed, listening to music is how she will spend most of her day. So sometimes we have it hide it. She always finds her music and will go to any length to get it. For instance, I have seen her drag a chair across a room and climb up to find her CD hiding behind a book. She will then take herself back to the player and try to play it herself, often successfully. She loves music from India.
Our CD player is broken, and some of our favorite music is worn out. We need music! Music and audible stories give my students a way to express their personalities through their choices.
