I am a new teacher in Sunnyvale, California, anxiously awaiting my 1st grade students this August! Having met them this year as kindergarteners, my future students are inquisitive, thoughtful, and kind. They are excited learners, helpful friends, enthusiastic readers and clever mathematicians. They are from India, Mexico, Iran, Vietnam, Japan, China, El Salvador, Canada, and all parts of the U.S., and each student contributes sincerely and substantially to the others' learning.
I am thrilled to have a very multicultural class of students, and am hoping to build a classroom library that reflects students' different backgrounds and experiences!
The books I have selected will allow me to show, through read-alouds and in students' own discovery in their independent and partner reading, characters who share some of the same family structures, abilities and disabilities, immigrant backgrounds, and language experiences they have.
I would appreciate any support in this venture and I know my students would as well!
My Project
These read-aloud books will support my students through helping them recognize all the various and fantastic experiences they get to share and learn from one another. These books help start discussions about immigration and disability, they serve as "mirrors" to students who all too often see only white children in classroom literature, and help my students think about kindness, fairness and other values in exciting ways.
Each book is powerful, inspiring, beautiful, thought-provoking and developmentally appropriate.
I have read all of these books individually and can enthusiastically vouch for their quality! Thank you sincerely for any help you can provide.
