My students need multicultural food and dress up clothes, science materials like magnetic tiles and light table manipulatives as well as a couch for our classroom library.
My classroom consists of children with varying skills as well as some children with special needs. We are a true community and we encourage acceptance of each other.
There are 15 students in our class.
Many of the students in our class this year have family members all over the world. Several families have traveled to Africa, Korea, and other locations. Many speak a second language in their homes. We have some children with special needs as well as children without. We embrace opportunities for peer modeling and acceptance throughout the classroom.
A lot of time and effort goes into planning activities that are rich in diversity as well as to plan activities that evoke a deeper level of play and understanding. Often times, language support materials and play prompts are needed for the students to engage the way the materials are intended.
My Project
Our goal is for the children to get more hands-on experience, to evoke curiosity, and exploratory learning. Materials requested are for the Science area, the Art area, blocks, and dramatic play. I also have a couch in this project for our library; thus, creating a warm and homey space for the children to cozy up to a good book. Additionally, I hope that the students feel connected to the new multicultural items and that they feel more "at home" when playing with them. I also hope for them to share a deeper play with one another thus educating their peers.
The donations for this project will give the children access to many materials that I have tried to "create," but have not been sustainable once the children have played with them.
This includes item such as a couch that broke, homemade blocks, and other materials that are not durable enough for continued use. I would like the children to have hands-on learning with items that evoke curiosity, play, and mostly embrace different cultures.
