I teach at a Title I school where approximately 20% of my students are Native American. My school is one of the few schools in the district to offer a Native curriculum. More than 50% of the students are on free or reduced-price lunch and 10% are homeless; many of the students have experienced some kind of trauma.
My students have vivid imaginations and love to express themselves creatively.
These students also have an insatiable curiosity for knowledge, and their perseverance and exuberance astonishes me every day.
My Project
I would like for my students to have access to the multicultural picture books identified by the Center for the Study of Multicultural Children's Literature (CSMCL) as the "best" of 2018. These are books that the CSMCL considers as "books of especially commendable quality, books that exhibit creativity, and books of fiction, information, poetry, and pictures for all age levels that reflect and encourage the interests of children and youth in exemplary ways.
Access to these multicultural books will help my students feel that their culture is valued, and the exposure to characters of different backgrounds will help my students develop empathy toward others.
Please help our school library obtain these wonderful books.
