Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"For everyone of us that succeeds, it's because there's somebody there to show you the way out. The light doesn't always necessarily have to be in your family; for me it was teachers and school." Like Oprah Winfrey's statement, I want my students to know they can succeed despite their disadvantages.
My students are a lively bunch!
They are vibrant and motivated to learn in spite of the hardships they may encounter in their daily lives. I teach in an inner-city public school. As a Title I school all of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Over eighty percent of our students are English Language Learners. Many of their homes lack essential educational resources.Unfortunately, many of them have never traveled outside the boundaries of their community and few students have interacted with individuals from different cultures.
I strive to provide an open and positive environment to enhance my students' learning in order for them to reach their potential both academically and socially.
My Project
Providing students with an environment that is conducive to learning is key in order for them to aspire to achieve. When my students feel comfortable, safe, and respected, their success in class increases. The books and CDs I am requesting will heighten their awareness of other cultures and countries. Through these materials we will find similarities and differences in the cultures we explore. These materials will be an excellent resource that will help them value their background as well as others they learn about.
Our classroom is also in need of a new carpet and additional seating space. Not only will the carpet and loungers help us update our classroom but it will provide a comfortable space where my students can come together for read alouds, sharing, and exploring. The carpet is the central point of our classroom where discussions, problems, and solutions are shared. A clean and bright space will bring excitement to my students!
