This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our large, urban, fabulous school is full of dedicated and loving students. About 19% of our students are proficient in reading, compared to 31% of the entire state's students. Every student - especially teenagers - likes to read about other people's lives who are just like them. These books will inspire empathy and a love for reading.
Our school is one of the most diverse in the state, and the students' interests are just as varied - they need literature that reflects and respects these differences!
My Project
Besides the ability to raise test scores, reading widely has the ability to make one more empathetic. The books The Hate U Give, Dear Martin, I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, and We Are Okay each have a protagonist that is underrepresented in YA literature. Children of Blood and Bone and Boy 21 also uniquely capture young adult males' attention - not an easy feat!
These materials will allow my students to independently read, discuss, and design projects to assess their own learning and critical consciousness as they navigate an increasingly complex world.
They will be able to carry these books home and share what they loved and learned about the books with the whole class.
