Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a low-income school with grades 6-12. We are stressed out and tested out. I push my kids hard and have high expectations because I know they can do it, and they never fail to perform to high expectations.
I like to fend off the stress levels by having fun and engaging projects for the students to complete, things that get them up and moving while learning.
We do projects where they have to write and perform certain tasks like skits, plays, rap battles, and court cases. These types of projects always engage the kids because they are natural-born actors and actresses, especially at the high school age.
The students are always committed to the "out of the box" projects and have even requested that final products be shared in showcases or with the administration. I love that they are fully invested in class and love that they enjoy writing, reading, and performing.
My Project
Our classrooms are minimally furnished with books for students to read for independent reading options, and many of the books offered are American writers. I am looking to expand my classroom library to allow students to complete a multicultural independent reading project.
Through giving students the stories of those from around the world they are able to find people they relate to and learn the skill of empathy for those they do not know.
At a time and age where stories about different cultures vary depending on the news source, I believe that it is important to allow students to understand the lives of people from across the globe. Giving students texts such as Things Fall Apart, The Farming of the Bones, and The Kite Runner allow students to see the world through a different lens and teach empathy for a group of people they have heard different things about.
