Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Eighty-five percent of students in my K-8 school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. I teach in an Inclusion Kindergarten classroom, meaning that there is a population of children within the room with documented learning or behavioral disabilities. There are 25 children in my classroom, 18 boys and 7 girls. Many of the children are first generation Americans, and English is not the primary language spoken at home; for many of the children, their main exposure to the English language comes in my classroom.

My Project

The funding of this project will allow me to incorporate books into the classroom that better reflect what the children in the classroom look like. The children in my class are from various areas of the world, they have different color skin, and they have different abilities. The books that I have asked for have characters that are African American, Asian, have disabilities, and come from different family structures just like the population of my class. Having characters that the children can relate to will help them be better able to make self to text connections and process the information presented in a more relevant manner.
