My students get up each morning because they're part of a classroom family. As a teacher in a low income/ high poverty (94%) school we strive to meet the needs of each child and make a point to wish our missing students well before beginning our academics. Despite the many hardships they may face, I am aiming to keep an inviting collaborative atmosphere and provide my students with meaningful experiences to fuel their lifelong learning.
My students are a collaborative creative family of problem solvers.
They like having a choice, love reading nonfiction, and thrive on lots of positive attention. Many of them are in a single or generational household and receive free breakfasts, lunches, and healthy snacks at school based on their social economic status.
Things out of their control may prevent them from life experiences many of us see as "typical." After I gather them from breakfast, I focus on having them realize their potential and guide them to grow academically and socially while under my care. And, to realize they can certainly control their experiences during the school day. By doing this in a caring and creative way, I am thrilled to inspire our future learners.
My Project
I teach at a school where students do not have as much exposure to many cultures outside of their own. We live in a small community and I would like to bring the world to them!
Having a variety of text that encourage children to learn about and accept other cultures will be invaluable in my classroom.
The books I have requested promote a diverse set of cultures. My students will learn to respect not only other cultures, but view their own as important as well. It is my goal to see my students accepting of all different types of people and to become more open minded.
Students will create a laminated book of these and other cultures we will research throughout the year.
