My students need multicultural picture books to learn about their own and new cultures as they become familiar with new surroundings, and build a bridge between their cultures and others.
Unique, sparkling-eyed ESL (English as a Second Language) kids want an equally unique way to learn. Their imagination runs high. Extra energy and fun brings life to the classroom, and my students have plenty of both.
We want to move, sing, and play in the real world as much as possible-- to connect our brain neurons to life in a way that'll deepen our understanding, ignite imagination, and keep us learning forever.
That is why the projects I select keeps the kids engaged in the world around them.
My Project
I have chosen books from Spanish and Native American cultures, as well as, familiar European fairy tales, such as "The Princess and the Pea," in a different cultural setting. I have included one theater reading book of fairy tales for kids. There is also a book with five-minute fairy tales to familiarize students with the different adaptations. I will display these books on a revolving display bookshelf in a reading area.
Students can browse books from their own cultures and learn new cultures to help them create a bridge, giving them new perspectives and confidence.
I love my children, and I am sure you can see when you look at their pictures that they are so worth every effort to give them the best.
