My students come from country homes, life in the big city, migrant families, and Spanish speaking households. They range in their acquisition of the English language, and they have a variety of extracurricular interests from soccer and football, to student council and scouting. They love to write scary stories, learn about dinosaurs, and discuss scientific issues.
My students have unmatched school spirit, thirst for knowledge, and passion for helping others and the planet.
With many of their families speaking languages other than English at home, they are forced to be independent with their learning. Third grade is a year of excitement and change, and I sincerely hope that you will choose to be a part of it!
My Project
My students come from a wide variety of diverse backgrounds. Their home-languages, cultures, and traditions add an important element to our classroom; however, our library does not adequately reflect their multiculturalism.
Multicultural books are important for young readers because they allow students to see reflections of themselves in characters, as well as gain a better understanding of the world around them.
Your donation would give my students texts with African American, Japanese, Latin, and Native American characters. With these materials (Seven Miles to Freedom: The Robert Smalls Story, A Place Where Sunflowers Grow, and In Her Hands: The Story of Sculptor Augusta Savage) my students would analyze the differences and similarities between backgrounds, relate the cultures to those present in our school, and celebrate what makes people unique.
