Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year in second grade we are going on a trip around the world! We will be visiting Japan, Brazil, Ghana, France and many more countries. To engage and embed this social studies experience we will be integrating the arts.
Our school is a K-5 elementary public school in East Boston.
Most of our students are bilingual and in the process of learning English as a second language. They are curious and eager learners who benefit tremendously from visual representations of the curriculum. Our school is considered low-income and has been hit hard with budget cuts and therefore we lack many of the supplies we need. This project will benefit the 75 second graders in our school.
My Project
We are requesting watercolor paint, brushes, paper, masks and gems. In social studies we expose students to a variety of countries around the world. We know that different students connect to curriculum in different ways. It is so important to provide a wide variety of entry points into the learning experience. When we study Ghana and its culture; students will weave colored paper into Kente cloth. During our lesson about Japan; students will paint Japanese symbols using brushes and black ink to simulate the Japanese painting experience. As we travel through Brazil, we will decorate Mardi Gras style masks. And, in France while learning about French art history, we will paint as the impressionist painters did! Providing a multidisciplinary experience in social studies allows all to connect more deeply to the material.
The requested materials will help add another dimension of creativity to our social studies curriculum.
It will also deepen student understanding of world cultures. Interdisciplinary learning engages and inspires the young learner. Furthermore, students will be developing motor skills, cooperating, sharing, and thinking critically.
