Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a public, tuition-free charter school serving the children from our city. My students are 61% Latino, 26% African-American, 10% Caucasian, 5% Asian/Pacific Islander and about 1% Native American.
Our school is a public school open to students regardless of socioeconomic status, academic ability, or ethnicity.
Students are admitted through a lottery. The school emphasizes personal initiative and social responsibility. The school’s education philosophy recognizes that children’s social and emotional well being are paramount to their success in school and in life. Teachers have been trained in a social emotional curriculum called Responsive Classroom. An important part of this philosophy is establishing a series of practices to create a calm and predictable learning environment.
My Project
I work with struggling readers in grades 2 and 3. Students who are not on grade level by the end of 3rd grade are much more likely to lag behind indefinitely.
There is overwhelming evidence that using multi-sensory techniques is not only more engaging for students, it is highly effective.
Studies show students use their whole bodies and multiple senses in order to enhance memory and learning of spelling-sound relationships.
Ball chairs will help engage students core body muscles and improve concentration as they read, while sand trays and colored pens will let students trace letters and sounds for mastery.
