My students need these books that come with audio so that they can read along! The students I teach need multi-sensory instruction to help strengthen their literacy skills!
Our school is in a borough of New York City. We are a Pre-K through 8th-grade school. Our students come from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds and cultures. We definitely represent the diversity of New York City. Some of my students are English Language Learners, some have special needs. Some of my students come from military families. This year, I have been working with many students on improving their reading skills. I like to tell them that they are unique, as we are still learning the best ways to teach them to become better readers! I do not want them to think they have a disability.
Our school motto is: "We are more than a school, we are a family."
I am so proud to work in this building!
My Project
On a daily basis, I work with students who are struggling to improve their reading skills. These students range in age, from five years old to eleven years old. Research shows that providing them with a multi-sensory experience helps to improve their literacy skills. Rather than just reading the text, given these materials, the students will also be able to listen to the story being read! For example, they can practice reading the story on their own. Then, they can listen to it being read. Finally, they can re-read the story. This practice helps them to develop their decoding, comprehension, and fluency skills! It also allows them to listen to stories above their reading level.
After listening to a story being read, it encourages them to continue working on their decoding skills.
