Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students enjoy learning math and science through hands-on experiences and infused into real-life situations. All of my students have been identified as exceptional learners and some as twice-exceptional. These middle schoolers are inquisitive and full of life! Our school is located centrally within Los Angeles and reflects its vibrancy and diversity.
My exceptional students all learn differently, but most benefit from project-based learning and hands-on experiments.
As such we are always looking for new things to measure, build and scale in our ratios and proportions lessons, as well as new ways to creatively model math and science concepts.
My Project
The two science lab kits and the math manipulatives will be used in small groups (labs) to provide multi-sensory access to the subject matter. The science lab kits will be used within two units cellular organisms & cells as well as sustainability. These science labs will give students another modality to the inquiry-based approach that I strive to build into these science lessons. They give students authentic, hands-on opportunities to practice the vocabulary, concepts, and skills of two science units. Students will be able to visualize and practice the application of the water cycle to sustainability as well as the application of cellular structure to medicine through gram-staining of bacterial cells. Both experiments promote inquiry and multi-sensory, real-world application of the concepts studied in these units.
My students need modeling and the ability to represent concepts in multiple ways.
These math manipulatives will help students visualize the otherwise abstract concepts of operations involving integers, fractions, decimals, and percents! When used in small groups in a collaborative and applied fashion, these manipulatives will help promote inquiry in mathematics!
