As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. My students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 90% of our students receiving free lunch. My students are between 6th and 8th grade. My students all have multiple disabilities, with 100% of them being non-verbal, and struggle to communicate with the world around them.
This project will help the students in my classroom grow and communicate in a more effective manner.
My Project
When it comes to our classroom, five out of six students are wheelchair bound. We have a few places in the classroom that allow them to get out of their chair and be more comfortable for periods of time. Unfortunately, when they are out of their chairs they have no form of stimulation or sensory objects.
The following materials will allow my students to be stimulated through sensory materials both in and out of their wheelchairs.
The arch activities will allow my students to be stimulated by multiple handing materials both in and out of their wheelchairs. The music toys in the Baby Band Rhythm set will be used and attached to the Arch Wheelchair Activity for additional sensory learning. The Light Table Sensory Play Materials and Water Beads will allow my students to explore the world through touch and allow them to use sensory learning! The Vibrating Pillows will allow my students to use their upper body strength to sense a new sensation they may not have previously been exposed to.
