My Students
In the heart of one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the country, the students in my first grade class face a daily fight for a brighter future.
These are not typical students.
These are students who face incredible odds -- students whose households struggle with addiction, homelessness, incarceration, hunger, poverty, illiteracy, and endless discrimination. These are students who have experienced trauma beyond what we can imagine.
What my students lack in privilege and resources, they make up for with dreams and drive. These students deserve so much more than is currently available to them, and I thank you in advance for fostering their drive and supporting their emotional well-being by donating to a project that will offer them a safe place to process their emotions in a healthy, productive manner.
My Project
Throughout the day, my students struggle to express their myriad feelings in ways that are socially acceptable. We expect them to sit and learn for extended periods of time, yet we often fail to equip them with the skills and materials to do so. In my classroom, I have a "Calm Corner," a sanctuary where my students can go to escape the pressures of their world, a place where they can recharge, a haven where they are free to be CHILDREN. However, I recently discovered that my Calm Corner lacked materials that address all five senses, something that research says is essential to optimal learning. With this project, I seek donations that will meet students' multi-sensory needs so they can maintain their focus and maximize their learning.
