Multi-Media Magazines Inspiring Curiosity in an ELL Classroom
Help me give my students multi-media science, social studies, and current event reading material that will support a love for learning, encourage meaningful discussions, and spark curiosity.
Every day our room works hard to build a kind and caring classroom environment in which all students can experience academic, social, and emotional growth. We focus on the importance of creativity and problem solving to help us navigate life's challenges. What makes our classroom unique, is that all of our students are English language learners between ages 6 and 13 with diverse cultural and family backgrounds. My personal mission as an ELL teacher is to make sure school is an environment where students can feel safe, experience success, and view their heritage as a strength. Thank you for introducing Scholastic News to our classroom, to connect our students to the world, spark curiosity, encourage meaningful discussions, and inspire a love for learning.
My Project
What is the value of $5.00? At Starbucks, $5.00 might be a steamy drink, on Amazon $5.00 could be your new favorite movie, but on Donors Choose, $5.00 can be so much more. For just over $5.00 per student, this project will provide engaging non-fiction reading materials to spark curiosity and encourage academic dialogue in the ELL classroom. Scholastic News is a weekly print and digital magazine written specifically for young readers. Each age group has a special magazine published for their grade level. These weekly magazines feature critical science and social studies standards while simultaneously teaching essential reading skills and strategies. What makes Scholastic News different?
It's an absolute joy to see students working together, completely engaged in their experience reading, smiling, and discussing "Amazing Animal Adaptations" and "Isle of Bunnies." The Scholastic News writers and editors truly remember what kids love and enjoy.
Each monthly subscription not only includes a printed magazine that students can take home, but also premium online content. This includes nonfiction videos, text-to-speech reading, archive access, vocabulary building activities, online skill games, printable activity pages, and differentiated lexile editions so all students can access the content at their reading level. In addition, all of these resources are available both in Spanish and English to enhance depth of understanding for Spanish-speaking multi-lingual students. Scholastic News adds much needed fun, meaningful, and engaging content to our classroom.
