Help me give my students some CD players, a basketball hoop, some cooking materials, and ink.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are an enthusiastic set of children, who enjoy learning new things, trying out new ideas, asking questions, and answering higher-level thinking questions. They also like to help each other with learning, whether it be learning to make a monster truck during choice time or learning to try a new move on the playground.
My students enjoy creating their own learning experiences.
During choice time, they enjoy carrying out ideas that they thought of during breakfast or on their way to school. When they see something on the road, they like to recreate some of what they saw in the classroom. When they go to the playground, they generate new ways to use familiar objects. They are quite creative and innovative and enjoy achieving a sense of accomplishment with what they have done.
During our Balls study, my students always want to play basketball, but have only been able to pretend to play it, since we do not have a hoop. With the arrival of a basketball hoop, they could develop their gross motor skills more effectively by engaging in basketball. In addition, while playing basketball, they would be able to learn about science concepts, such as distance and speed. They could broaden their vocabulary, by learning the words 'hoop', 'rim', etc. They could practice math concepts, like counting and measurement (how high or low).
When my students are engaged in choice time, their imaginations are boundless.
However, they usually need more pots and utensils, because we only have 2 pots, 1 spatula, and 1 ladle. With the addition of this new cooking set, they would be able to carry out many more play ideas, since these items have connections to more cooking experiences that they may have at home. The batteries will allow their CD players, blender, mixer, microscope, and timer to work.
The additional books would help to enhance our studies of Simple Machines and Buildings. My students like to read, and they also like to listen to books being read to them. These new books would bring much excitement and help them to broaden their vocabulary while we learn about simple machines and buildings.
The ink is for printing the newsletters for their parents, in addition to other classroom documents. The CD players are for audio books that they use in the library. The markers will help with writing their responses to questions that go on the display boards for their parents and other visitors to see.
