Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is a 2nd grade dual language (English-Mandarin) class of about 22 students in District 1 in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City. Most of my students come from low-income families and my school is a Title I school. Many of them receive free lunches based on their socioeconomic status.
Despite the many challenges they face, such as little food at home, my students are always so smiley, kind, thoughtful, and so generous.
They will save their snacks and surprise me by leaving snacks such as an apple, a banana, or a pack of cranberries on my desk! Their words, "You need brain food!" make my heart melt! They are intelligent, fun loving, creative, and spontaneous.
I am looking to provide my students with hands-on, fun, and meaningful learning experiences. I need your help to make that possible.
My Project
In a world where instant gratification is often the norm, having to put a little time and effort into building a toy will help kids to appreciate the toys they have and the mechanics behind them.
I am hoping that through the use of these build your own robot kits, this project will spark an interest in robotics and engineering among my students, increase their creativity, teach them to follow directions, and the finished products will give them a sense of accomplishment and confidence.
Robotics also matches the new digital technologies curriculum in our nation and helps address the growing demand for teaching Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in schools. It is a fun way to get our students engaged in learning.
Many thanks for helping fund this project and make learning fun and meaningful for my students!
