Multi-cultural Projects Mean Everyone Gets To Celebrate!
We need paint, poster board, glue sticks, and markers. My students need these materials for two multi-cultural events (Day of the Dead and Chinese New Year).
My students are the neighborhood students at an International Baccalaureate school. While many of the students who attend my school commute in from other parts of the city to take part in the college-like education that my school offers, my students are from our less affluent neighborhood. This means that they are at a disadvantage. They are often behind in reading, writing, math, and life experiences than more affluent families. My goal as a teacher is to find ways to make-up the difference through awareness, aggressive (but obtainable) goals and experiences that inspire the to want to do better for themselves!
My Project
One fo the goals within my class is to participate in three multi-cultural events at our school. By crossing art and English, my students have moments that they can celebrate each other's heritage and enjoy reading and writing. The poster boards allow for Dia De Los Muertos poetry written by the students (translated by our Spanish Class) and to be culturally correlate adorn. We then participate in the Lunar New Year Celebration at our campus where the students create their own interactive displays so that they can share their knowledge of another culture in a fun and meaningful way. This means that 45% of my class feels as though they have a seat at the table. This year we made advocacy posters for Black History month but also want to participate in our International Expo where students share aspects fo their own cultures for the communities to enjoy!
