My students need a classroom set of the novel The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros to complete a unit on ethnicity, acceptance, and culture.
This project expired on September 20, 2012.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
In today's multi-cultural classroom, students need exposure to books written by various authors with diverse backgrounds in order to be exposed to worldly topics.
My students are ninth and tenth graders in a public school in Mississippi.
I have a variety of cultures represented in each class. Our school has over 1,400 students. My students enjoy reading, writing, and discussing literature and are eager to be exposed to a variety of texts.
I am requesting a classroom set of the novel The House on Mango Street about a Latino family. While my students are exposed to literature by and about black Americans, from Frederick Douglass to Maya Angelou, our textbooks do not have many pieces by those from other cultures.
My project is important to my students because it will expose them to a culture that they know little about.
They will be able to discuss differences in their world and defy stereotypes.
