Our students are a group of children who face many challenges.
These amazing children are constantly rising up to meet not only their physical and mental challenges, but have to overcome some home challenges as well.
Our entire school loves all our intensive needs children. These students are bussed into our school from some of the roughest neighborhoods in our city. They are an integral part of our school community. We all enjoy watching how caring and kind everyone is toward our students.
Some of the challenges that our kids have are visual impairments, needing specially enlarged print. Another one may not be able to stay focused unless special accommodations are made for each lesson. When these children are able to stay on track with their peers, it is a victory for all of us!!
We believe in these children and fully enjoy helping them to reach their highest potential!
My Project
My students need a color printer and ink. They also use a lot of Velcro to help keep on schedule. My students will relate to a correctly colored item more than a greyscale or black and white picture.
Imagine trying to help the visually challenged student to locate and recognize basic signs such as "stop" or "exit" or "danger" using a black and white visual.
Our classroom uses numerous visual schedules including many aids to help our children to independently self monitor their routine throughout the day.
We also use our visual sentence strips to help our children facilitate communication. Children that have difficulty retrieving the correct words, benefit from using colorful visuals to assist them while learning to express themselves.
These items that we use also are very useful when students are trying to engage in conversations with their peers.
