We are 100% free and reduced lunch. Several of them are in foster care or have been adopted. Several are from broken homes struggling to get by and several are even homeless. Out of 61 students, 26 are female and lacking the drive to learn science.
Here at PG, our students come from different backgrounds and hardships.
Due to their hardships, they are unable to get the opportunity to experience science outside of the classroom. Therefore the experience of meeting real-life scientists today and interact with them is out of the picture.
My Project
Muddy Sneakers is an environmental education program for 5th graders. This innovative program educates on the core concepts of the state science curriculum using hands-on, experiential teaching methods spread over multiple, outdoor classroom experiences. Not only do the students study the science curriculum outside of the classrooms in local state parks, but they are able to meet real scientists. Some of the scientists that come out to work with the students are naturalists who have studied in other countries, bird specialists, and environmentalists.
Merging the energy of my young students with the energy of the outdoors sets the stage for deeply felt experiences that instill a "backyard" awareness to the curriculum.
Fifth grade is a tested grade for the science curriculum. Therefore, having these experiences will help with their understanding and mastery.
