Making mud pies with fourth graders? Absolutely! I teach science to fourth graders in a low-income school adjacent to a military base. These students are sharp and well-traveled for their age in many circumstances, but also face extreme hardships when parents deploy or only one parent works because of their high mobility rate.

In these tight economic times, budgets barely cover basic classroom needs. Our science standards demand that students learn and understand complicated processes that are difficult to illustrate in words. These children of active duty military members need exciting opportunities to look forward to at school. This takes their minds off of hard home situations, while at the same time conveying difficult science concepts in a developmentally appropriate way.

I am asking for stream table kits so that groups of students can simulate water erosion in a small group. In this way students can see up close what happens as water moves across the surface of the earth. This "mud pie" experiment has a fabulous "WOW" factor as erosion and deposition are happening right before the students' eyes. This lab experience provides the students with an unforgettable classroom activity that directly relates to science standards tested in the next grade level, totally setting them up for success.

Providing this opportunity for these students will empower them as lifelong learners. Your help will allow them to be successful in reaching science goals. It will also give them a reason to enjoy school, enjoy science, and most of all enjoy learning!
