My students need a new heavy duty electric pencil sharpener.

R.I.P. May our dearly departed pencil sharpener rest in peace. After much use, our electric pencil sharpener has trimmed its last tip. The poor thing has expired from too much love and attention.
I teach two classes of 24 students each Literacy and Social Studies.
A large majority of my students are English Language Learners and need the connection between reading and writing emphasized. My students, also, come from an economically disadvantaged background. Most of them have limited access to even the most basic of school supplies.
By nature, we spend a lot of our time linking our reading to writing. Therefore, pencils are well used and often dull. With a population of Economically Disadvantaged students, the pencils they are able to bring to school are not high quality and therefore do not sharpen well in the wall mounted pencil sharpener. The electric sharpener we previously had has moved on to greener pastures and we are trying to make do with several dull hand held pencil sharpeners and a cranky (haha) wall mounted sharpener that does little except chew up the cheap pencils.
Without, the basic of necessities-- a sharpened pencil-- students are not able to engage in the simplest of written activities.
We spend a great deal of time connecting reading, writing, and social studies to increase learning. Without sharpened pencils, we cannot get this done. By supporting this grant, our classroom will once again be on point! Your help will allow my class to flourish in a literacy rich environment written by the students themselves.
