My students need the online Edmark sight words reading program to help them increase their basic sight word vocabulary and help them become more functional readers before they leave high school.
I teach 18 22-year-old young adults with a variety of intellectual, physical, and sensory impairments in our high school's Transition Program. My students are focusing their time in school on preparing for life after high school; that looks different for every student. We work with each student individually to help them communicate their personal goals and visions for their futures.
My students are looking forward to being as independent as possible after high school.
All of my students participate in internships and jobs around our school building and in the community as part of their education. We also practice interviewing skills, job applications, cooking, cleaning, money, time, and functional writing skills.
Most of my students are looking forward to moving out of their parents' home, working, and being involved in their community when they finish school. Others are looking to continue their education in a college or vocational/trade training program.
My Project
My students have demonstrated great success with the Edmark reading program. We used to have the PC version, but upgraded our computer system and our software is no longer compatible.
The Edmark Reading Program has consistently helped students with significant disabilities become better readers quickly, increasing their confidence, and making them more functional, independent students who can finally learn to enjoy reading.
Our school is a 1:1 iPad school, so each of my students has their own iPad. With this online program, they can all access the curriculum they need at the same time. With the previous computer version, only one student could work at a time because we only have one PC in the classroom. As a result, students’ access, and therefore, progress was limited. This program will allow all of our students to access Edmark when they need it, and should greatly increase student progress.
