My Students
My students are voracious 5th grade readers from the city of Camden! When people typically think of Camden, they think of the poverty and violence that the media choose to focus on when describing our city. However, my students prove every day just how much hope and promise exist here. In our class, there are readers of all skill levels and abilities that are always anxious to read new and exciting material. Their eyes light up whenever they have the chance to explore a new world through a book.
My Project
Students at my school are building the habits of strong readers, and are required to have an independent reading book with them at all times! We are trying to instill in them a love of reading that will last them their whole lives. I want kids to be able to choose books that are just right for them from a variety of different genres and from authors who look like and write about people who look just like them. Because they read so much, we need some new titles to ensure that they find books that appeal to their developing interests.
Our homeroom has several English-language learners and it would be amazing to also give them a selection of Spanish-language books that they can read while they learn a new language.
