This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have been given the opportunity to teach a pilot curriculum at my middle school. We have recently been distinguished as an IB World School and my curriculum involves teaching Social Studies through fiction and non-fiction. In order to be enrolled in my class, my students have selected because of their academics. This is important because they are learning at a much higher level than their other classmates, setting them up for success.
One of the reasons my students are deserving of this donation is because in the area of Charlotte they live in has a low socio-economic status, some of who are homeless, yet they are still academically gifted despite their hardships.
I teach 6th-8th grade students who have shown me that despite everything they have going on outside of the classroom, they come in every day ready to learn and interested in the materials I am teaching them. A majority of my scholars excel at at least a grade level above in reading levels, which is a big deal as some of the other scholars in the school are one to two grade levels behind in reading and math.
My Project
My students love to read but the books in my library aren’t really their style. Graphic novels, novels that talk about minority groups, books that talk about current events are something my students crave.
We have read books about social issues as a whole class but I know that my scholars wish to read similar stories independently as well!
From The 57 Bus to Simon vs the Homo Sapiens, there is something for students from all social, racial, and economic standpoints. These books have characters that my students can relate to, which will help them be engaged and look forward to reading.
Books are a great way for middle schoolers to expand their literacy as well as become social agents of change! Please help us stock our library with books my kids actually want to read!
