This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
All of my students are hardworking, kind-hearted, outspoken young individuals who need greater access to more diverse works of literature. They've already asked me several times when they'll get an opportunity to go to the library. However, our class library is fairly limited and does not reflect the makeup of our student population. I want to ensure that my students see themselves positively represented in the stories they read, and that the books they pick up are relevant to their lives to show that their narratives and voices matter!
My Project
More culturally relevant books will allow my students to see themselves and their stories represented in a whole new light. They will be able to gain accesss to a much larger cultural conversation about the issues we face today about racial inequity and learn that they are part of the movement. These books will empower and inspire kids to speak up about their own lives and struggles by giving them the opportunity to see others going through similar experiences modeling that very act. Ultimately, a more diverse class library will teach them to become active members in their communities, global learners, culturally responsive citizens, and conscientious individuals.
