My students need a pest-free environment to attend school in. These electronic pest-repellers, fans, covered trash cans, detergent, and a vacuum cleaner will help eliminate the unwanted critters in my classroom. Thank You!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a Special Education Center High School for students ages 14-19. Our amazing program is located in Detroit, Michigan. We have three wings that serve students with Autism, Cognitive Impairments, and Severe/Multiple Impairments. We service students from the entire City of Detroit. Our school has 204 beautiful, young people with varying strengths and weaknesses. Their backgrounds are as diverse as their abilities. I have students whose parents are my colleagues and students who live in boarded up houses. Some come from 2-parent homes, and some come from three different homes.
We are all unique, but we are definitely a family here.
My Project
Roaches, and bedbugs, and ants, oh my! Did I forget the mice...? Let me clarify-none of these are classroom pets! Although we are tight on our cleanliness in Room 40, so as to help keep the critters under control, they still sneak in from outdoors and in student backpacks. Because teachers are not allowed to utilize any kind of chemical pesticides for the safety of the students, we need these electronic pest deterrents to help assist us in eradicating the pests from our classroom and hallway.
No child should have to deal with pests in their classroom-it is undignified; sadly many students don't bat an eyelash.
Along with the electronic devices, I would like to put a few additional safeguards in place in my classroom, including mopping more often, covered trash cans, and daily laundry, sweeping and vacuuming. We do have a spectacular custodial crew, however, due to the unwelcome visitors, I would like to step up the current routine. This will hopefully help prevent attracting pests to our room to begin with.
A final concern is that we hesitate to open our windows when it warms up due to the critter concerns, and the fact that we have no screens. Therefore fans would be the final helpful preventative element. If we had classroom fans to help regulate the temperature in the classrooms, we wouldn't have to open windows allowing creatures in! However, Many of our students have a variety of medical conditions such as epilepsy that require temperature regulation. In addition, wheeling oneself around in a chair or utilizing a walker can be taxing and over-heat the body. It is very important that our students are kept cool.
We appreciate any assistance toward our mission: Cleanliness. Thank You!
