Now more than ever the positive impacts of school highlighted. School closure has shown that our school now only provided education but also food, childcare, emotional support, and joy.
90% of our students receive Free and Reduced Lunch.
This means our families are and will be dealing with the economic fallout of COVID-19 for not just weeks, but years. Many of my classroom parents work in essential services such as grocery, delivery or restaurants. Understandably for my families when the stress of food insecurity and rent is present, sitting down to do assignments is not the highest priority.
Even with these stressors my families and students have shown a desire to learn and great resilience. Currently, I have Zoom class each day. 12/19 of my students regularly attend. Unfortunately my other 7 students do not have internet access. Students also complete a number of Seasaw activities each day.
Luckily before school ended we were able to pass out school supplies, books and devices to our students. While we sent home food with the students, those supplies have run out as we are in week 7 of school closure. The most pressing need for my students currently is healthy snacks.
My Project
Under non pandemic circumstances many of my families rely on school to provide food. During these times the effects of food insecurity has become greater. Understandably for my families that are worried about rent or food, learning is not the highest priority.
My hope is that this project alleviates some of these stressors so that families can direct their attention on learning.
Luckily before school ended we were able to pass out school supplies, books and devices to our students. While we sent home food with the students, those supplies have run out as we are in week 7 of school closure. The most pressing need for my students currently is healthy snacks and food. This project includes many of the snacks that we have in the classroom. At school my students were getting snacks daily, and sometimes more if they wanted it. This regular access to snacks gave them brain food to really focus on their work. Now without it my students are struggling with their learning stamina. These snacks will give them the necessary energy to continue learning.
